Here are My Top 10 Tips for filming your Baby with your Flip:

1. Prenatal Flip. You might want start to film early, like getting the room ready, or arguing about whose Grandad gets the middle name!

2. Get ready for lift off. Make sure you have your Flip ready to rock in your hospital bag so when you dash out of the door Dad will have it to hand after the birth. Don’t worry about the nightie just remember to bring the charger and AA’s!

3. Plan like a Reality show. As I refer to in my Free e-book (see right hand column), prepare the filming in your head and give it a narrative. You’ve probably watched one of those docusoaps about Maternity wards? You can use the same techniques as TV people. So tell a story not just get random shots. Ask each other questions on camera about how you feel welcoming the new arrival,  include a quick interview with the Midwife if she’s friendly! Film the first call you make to the Grandparents.

4. Use your voice. The Flip will record the time and date you filmed the clip. But it’s a good idea at the start of your clip to record you voice stating what the event or scene is, why you are choosing to record it and the significance, how old your Baby is etc. In later years this voice diary, will help you work out what’s going on in the video.

5. The big moments. What’s cool about the slimline Flip is you can keep it on a shelf ready to go. Always keep it charged up and with record space. The big moments in a Baby’s and toddlers life come fast and furious. The first time they laugh, the first word, first steps, you need to be able to grab your camera and catch the moment right away.

6. Think out of the box. It’s easy to shoot only the obvious. But look for new angles. Get the camera down to Baby’s level on the floor or the mattress, film  backwards towards the doting Mum to give a Baby’s eye view. How about attaching your Flip to a Gorillapod and fixing it to the Pram frame to show Baby on the move?

7. Keep it long. I often say you should keep your videos quick and snappy and don’t shoot too much footage. However, with a Baby you should actually slow down. With my 2 babies I could just stare at their faces for ages to see all the little expressions. So lock the camera off on the Gorillapod and just let the camera roll.

8. Don’t avoid the upsets. Let’s face it crying is a major part of you and your Baby’s life! You might even miss it later when they grow up so you might as well capture the rough with the smooth for the archives. Keep it real.

9. Grandma’s footsteps. It’s easy to forget everyone else. You could film Grandma or Grandad cradling Baby and ask them some questions about how they raised you as a Baby. It’ll become a Family video to treasure.

10. Which Flip? If you are buying a Flip for some Baby filming I’d go for the Flip Mino HD. It’s tiny, and as you’ll be carrying a tonne of stuff around with you every bit of space in your bag is valuable. Also it can focus a little closer than the Ultra so is better for tight Baby Face shots.
